Henry Posner III

I. Basics

Henry Posner III is an American rail investor, executive, and educator, best known as co‑founder and long‑time chairman of Pittsburgh‑based Railroad Development Corporation, which has invested in and operated freight and passenger railways in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Africa. He earned a BS in civil engineering from Princeton University in 1977 and an MBA in finance from the Wharton School in 1982, then began his career at Conrail in 1977 in operating, marketing, planning, and sales roles. Posner chairs Iowa Interstate Railroad, RDC‑Deutschland, RegioRail in France, and the EBT Foundation, and has been associated with other rail ventures such as Eurorail and Vivarail. He also serves as a lecturer in the Department of History at Carnegie Mellon University, teaching about the American railroad in the deregulation era, and holds or has held advisory and governance roles with the Association of American Railroads, the Surface Transportation Board’s Passenger Rail Advisory Committee, and other transport bodies. As chair of the Posner Foundation of Pittsburgh, he oversees philanthropy supporting causes including Jewish communities in the former Soviet Union, rail safety organization Operation Lifesaver, and major gifts to institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, and he has been recognized by honors including selection among Trains magazine’s “75 People You Should Know” and induction into the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association Hall of Fame.
